Rise of Jiu-Jitsu in Hollywood
Did you catch the triangle choke in Black Panther?
Black Panther looks set to be one of the biggest films of the year after it delivered $235m (£167m) in North America over the four-day President’s Day holiday weekend.

The film is definitely a refreshing installment in the sometimes jaded Marvel universe. However what caught our eye was some Jiu-Jitsu technique in one of the key scenes. Apparently the cast spent time training in a number of martial arts including Jiu-Jitsu and Judo.
In the key scene the hero and prospective king must face down a challenger to the throne in ritual combat. The scene spectacularly takes place on a mountain and features a series of combat styles. However the faith of the king’s opponent is sealed with what seems to be a modified triangle choke with an armbar.
Specifically it seems to be a reverse triangle (Ura Sankaku Jime).
From where Breaking Grips was sitting it did not seem like the triangle was on but hey who cares!! We are just happy to see BJJ on the big screen.
